The tiniest computer!

Can you believe this is a fully functional PC?

It’s got an Atom Z530 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 2 gigabit ethernet ports, wifi, etc. etc.

This tiny little amazing computer is called the fit-PC2i, and I just ordered one with Mint Linux on it. Whee!

Let the furious justification begin!

So despite these things being available for nearly three years in Europe and the US, Philips are going to make me order one all the way from the UK. “No plans to sell in Australia at this time,” they say. Booo! The people demand their trinkets:

HDR on iOS 4.1

I updated my phone this morning. Definitely snappier, snappier for sure.

Anyway, I took an HDR photo with the new-fangled HDR option. Here, have a look (click the photo for a bigger image, full 5MP resolution image is here)!

It can save a non-HDR copy as well, so you can say “ooh! aah! that’s so much sna^H^H^Hprettier!” (full 5MP resolution here)

Seems like it’ll be quite useful for those odd occasions where it’s really hard to get an evenly exposed photo.

This is too cool to be a mere shared Google Reader link. This mechanical butterfly in a jar is like one of those magnetically actuated aquaria, but amazingly realistic. Gaze upon its fluttering glory!

In celebration of the ongoing ash cloud menacing europe, and also because I can’t control my geeky impulses, I bought an icelandic domain name. Pretty cool, huh? Predictably, I can’t think of anything terribly useful to do with it, so I’ve loaded YOURLS onto it and am using it as a custom URL shortening service.

haven’t quite figured out how to catch a wave

I’ve now had a Google Wave account for about the past 2 weeks. Yet, despite having several of my friends on my contacts list, I haven’ t yet figured out a way to employ it that’s useful. So far, I’m pretty sure I’ve had the standard Wave beginner’s journey: Log in, update status, read through the welcome waves…

Chat with someone just like you would with Google Talk (but with live updating typing, ooer!). Send a wave to someone who’s not online right now, just like you would with Gmail. Play with editing someone else’s conversation, throw a voting gadget in, make fonts and colours all pretty and such.

I’ve had all these excited conversations with people about how revolutionary this thing is and yet despite my intense nerdiness haven’t really managed to get anything much to fruition. My inbox languishes empty, and I scuttle my way back to Gmail again. Have you done anything cool with Wave yet? Has it made some kind of communication much easier for you?

(… I’ll pre-empt many people’s first reaction by letting you know I haven’t been graced with any invites to give out yet.)

Ain’t it cute! I’m waiting with bated breath for the arrival of my next toy – that Denon mixer over there. I’m mildly concerned though – the sound card I had shipped last week was via USPS Express International which was tracked from the moment the seller logged the item for shipment online. This time, it’s coming via USPS Priority Mail International which has markedly mixed reports around the internet.

So I think it was sent last Tuesday – and I do have a tracking number. The concerning bit is just that it’s been nearly a week now and USPS track & confirm still says “There is no record of this item.”

I hope it’s en route and it’s just that some slackers haven’t bothered to scan it. I want toys, dammit! Ah well, time will tell.

Update: So it, uh, hadn’t actually been shipped yet. That would be why there was no record of it. And here I was getting all excited it would arrive soon! I blame independence day.
